Gupta stuns 13th seed

New Delhi: National champion Abhinn Shyam Gupta created the biggest upset of the day on Wednesday as he outplayed 13th seed Roslin Hashim of Malaysia 15-11, 8-15, 15-13 in the first round of the German Open badminton tournament at Duisburg.

The day also saw all other Indian shuttlers — former All England champion Pullela Gopichand, Nikhil Kanetkar, Chetan Anand and Arvind Bhat — move into the second round of the championship, according to information received here.

Kanetkar defeated Germany’s Gerben Bruijstens 15-13, 15-6 while Anand got the better of qualifier Arnd Vetters 13-15, 15-9, 15-6. Gopichand got a walkover from Mark Burgess while Bhat’s opponent Wacha Przemyslaw of Poland retired. (PTI)
