Calcutta: George Telegraph upset Durand Cup champions Chirag United 2-0 in a Calcutta Football League Premier Division match, on Thursday. Twaio Sayo and A.. Waheed scored the goals in either half. This was Chirag’s third defeat in the meet.

Chirag were nowhere near their best and struggled to make their way into rival territory. George Telegraph’s foreign players made the difference with their speed and opportunistic skills.

George Telegraph took the lead in the 36th minute when Sayo’s volley from 22 yards found the net. Waheed doubled the scoreline in the second session when he headed in a Souvik Biswas corner.

Waheed again came close to scoring in the dying minutes when he dribbled past a couple of defenders but failed to get past the’keeper.

George coach Biswajit Bhattacharjee said: “We had been pushed to the wall after our defeats… We had to win and there was no other way out.”
