He thus became the first Indian batsman to occupy a place in the top three since Sachin Tendulkar did it in 2004.
Dhoni had occupied the eighth spot in last week’s rankings.
Dhoni is joined in the top 10 by the leading run-scorer and Man of the Series, Yuvraj Singh, who climbed to ninth spot from 15th in the LG-ICC table.
Australia’s Adam Gilchrist occupies the top spot with 820 points, leaving Ricky Ponting far behind in second place with 797 points.
Irfan Pathan is placed fourth among the bowlers, and his 65-run contribution in the first match of the series has helped lift him to fourth in the list of allrounders.
The margin of victory lifted India to 4th place in the ODI rankings, ahead of Pakistan for the first time since June 2004.
