Dealing with Bangladesh spinners was something on England opener Jason Roy’s mind when the two teams met for the first time in T20Is in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. But rigorous nets sessions and backing his abilities paid dividends for Roy as he hardly had any problems against the spinners, though England had to chase down just 125 for victory.

“As a batsman, as a cricketer, you always have some darker thoughts going into your mind before the game. What if this happens or that happens!

“But you just have to remind yourself that your training has been so good. I worked a hell of a lot against (reserve spinner) Liam Dawson at nets. He has been bowling so much to me, which has really helped my game.

“So yeah, I’ve just got to keep reminding myself to do what I do in training,” Roy, adjudged Player of the Match for his 38-ball 61, later said.

“An area of my game I’ve been working extremely hard on is to be successful on slow pitches against left-arm spinners and the angle that the spinners tend to create,” he added. “It was a big game for me to go out there and put all the hard work I’ve been doing at nets into play.”

Roy also lauded the efforts of the England bowlers as they bowled over 50 dot balls, making it all the more harder for rival batsmen.
