Australian showjumper Jamie Kermond has been provisionally suspended for testing positive for cocaine, Equestrian Australia said in a statement on Wednesday.

The governing body said Kermond returned a positive A-sample for a metabolite of cocaine following a test conducted by Sport Integrity Australia on June 26.

"Mr. Kermond is prohibited from participating in any WADA-compliant event, including the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, while the provisional suspension is in place," the statement said.

It said Kermond has been banned from competing at the Tokyo Olympics but had the right to have his B-sample analysed.

The 36-year-old was expected to make his Olympic debut at Tokyo. The Australian Olympic Committee said in a statement that it was aware of Kermond's provisional suspension and that its selection committee would meet to consider his status on the team.

Kermond has reportedly not travelled to Tokyo with the rest of the Australian contingent.
