Calcutta: Assam recorded their first victory in Ranji Trophy this season when they beat Saurashtra by nine wickets at the Eden on Tuesday.

This was sweet revenge for Assam who had lost to Saurashtra in the 2015-16 Ranji Trophy semi-final. Assam now have seven points from five matches.

Assam missed an opportunity to claim a bonus point when Rahul Hazarika was dismissed for eight. Rishav Das, who made a 30 off 41 balls, and Sibsankar Roy reached the target of 64 without further hiccups and secured Assam six points.

Arup Das, who had taken seven wickets in the first innings, returned with another five-wicket haul to finish with match figures of 12 for 70, his best in first-class cricket. Krishna Das claimed four as the pace duo dismissed Saurashtra for 81 in 191 minutes, a little after lunch on the final day.

Assam's victory was significant considering that more than a day's play was lost because of rain.

"Things went according to plan... Once we got a wicket in the first over after lunch, we went all out for victory... This victory will surely help to build confidence... We went in with a positive mindset, something that our coach Sunil Joshi has been stressing on... We have to do well in the remaining three matches to make the knockouts," said Arup.

"This victory will only make us more responsible in the coming matches... Things weren't going too good for us in the first few matches but things will hopefully be different from now on."
