This week: Neurology

My daughter (25) has been suffering from peculiar headaches which spark off all on a sudden. peculiar headache

My daughter (25) has been suffering from peculiar headaches which spark off all on a sudden. During a bout of such a headache (it usually affects one side of the head) she is unable to do any work and prefers to withdraw to a dark place. However, the problem goes away as soon as she gets a sound sleep. Could you suggest what has happened to her?

I think your daughter is suffering from migraine. In this condition, patients have a headache which affects any one or both sides of the head. Sometimes, the pain becomes so intense that patients feel immense discomfort in carrying out day-to-day activities ? patients sometimes don?t like light and want to stay away from it. Sometimes the pain may be accompanied by vomiting, as well. However, to exclude any other ailment (causing the headache), proper clinical examination and investigations should be done. If examinations confirm migraine, there is nothing to worry about because good medicines are available to tackle acute attacks and also prevent the onset of an episode of headache. So, please see a neuro-physician.

trouble in walking

For the last couple of months, my son (5) has been facing difficulty in walking. He?s also feeling drowsy and sometimes complains of headache. A doctor suggested some medicines, which hardly worked. Could you please suggest a remedy?

First, I would suggest you get a CT scan or an MRI of brain to get to the root of the problem. The symptoms suggest that there might be some disease in the brain, such as a brain tumour. In children the brain tumours are usually located in the posterior part of the brain ? and these tumours can give rise to the symptoms you?ve mentioned. It may also be due to some disorder which arises during the development of human brains. If this is the case he may need surgery which should be performed after a proper assessment of the condition. However, if the CT scan or MRI reveals nothing that

suggests brain tumours, other possible medical causes of headache (eye ailments, sinusitis, and neurological ailments) should be explored.

right side headache

I (29) suffer from periodic bouts of severe headache which remains confined to the right side of my head. It becomes so severe that it keeps me awake at night. Often it is accompanied with watering from the eyes. I consulted several physicians but none of them could help me. Could you help?

I think you?re suffering from a condition known as cluster headache. It occurs predominantly in males and manifests with a severe headache that hampers your regular life. Cluster headache is often associated with watering from eyes and it congests the nose. It usually does not go away after sleep. However, for excluding any other brain ailment, you should get some investigations (like CT scan and so on) done. I?d advise you to see a neuro-physician.

head injury

Three months ago, I (33) was admitted in a hospital due to head injury following a car accident. Within a week the condition improved and I was discharged from the hospital. But since then I?ve been suffering from a light headache that occurs everyday and attacks any time during the the day. Is it due to some internal injury to my brain?

Headache which occurs following a head injury usually goes away within a few days. But in some cases it may persist for months or even for years. This is called post-traumatic headache. The feature of this type of headache is that it may vary from person to person, but its intensity is mild to moderate. Sometimes such headache mimics the pain of migraine. However, the treatment is tailored according to symptoms. Analgesics or anti-depressant medication may help get rid of the ailment. However, you should have an X-ray of the cervical spine and a CT scan of the brain to exclude any disease in the brain and the spine. See a neuro-surgeon and act according to his advice.
