A unique evening of percussion was organized at the Gandhi Bhavan of Jadavpur University to mark the 82nd birth anniversary of the tabla guru, Shankar Ghosh. A documentary unveiling the life of Shankar Ghosh, followed by a vocal group performance, was an appropriate way to start the programme. Under the supervision of Sunil Banerjee, the disciples presented a collaboration of melodies and rhythms called Music of the Drums.
The first piece, " Navami", was composed in the Raga Kalavati and structured in accordance with nine beats. It continued to the next, titled "Happiness", in dadra, which was a combination of the Indian dhak and kansar ghanta and the Western triple kango and dhak, followed by a tabla composition and a dholok composition respectively. The sawal jawab session among the instruments elevated the mood. Supported by the khanjani throughout, it ended with a vocal chorus performance.
The last composition, named " Recitation" in the Raga Deshkar composed in Kaharva, was different; it was tuned with bols and sounded like a lyrical song.
The final performance was a tabla duet by Anindya Chatterjee and his son, Anubrata Chatterjee, with Hiranmoy Mitra on the harmonium. Anindya and Anubrata maintained a balanced flow of resonance and connection with each other. Apart from some of Anindya's own compositions, they presented some traditional pieces from the Punjab, Lucknow and Farukkabad gharanas. The chakradhars, toras and other nuances of the tabla, especially some wonderful tihais, elevated the ambience.
