Jajpur, Dec. 22: Police arrested a youth last night on charges of raping a 10-year-old student at Managobindapur village in the district.
The accused has been identified as Tapan Kumar Mirdha, 28, of Sadar police area in Balasore district. The medical examination of the girl has confirmed rape, the police said.
In his complaint with the Jajpur Road police, the victim;s father said that his daughter, a class V student at Managobindapur Nodal Upper Primary School, was raped at Mirdha’s rented house when she was returning home.
“The girl was returning home after school on Friday afternoon. The accused took advantage of it and lured her with chocolates. He then took her to his rented house and raped her. The victim informed her parents about the sexual assault only after reaching her home,” said inspector-in-charge of Jajpur Road police station, Ashwini Kumar Sahu.
The victim’s father approached the village committee for justice the same night, but the accused fled. Then a police complaint was filed against Mirdha. The police had sent the girl to Area hospital at Jajpur Road for medical examination, which confirmed rape.
“We arrested him from Jajpur-Keonjhar Road railway station, while he was trying to board a Howrah-bound train late last night,” said Sahu.
The accused has been remanded in judicial custody, the police said.
