Sambalpur, June 14: The municipal swimming pool here is set for a major revamp.
The ongoing renovation is expected to end by this year.
The swimming pool, which was being run and managed by the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation, has been handed over to the sports department for better management. The state-run Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Idco) is executing the project.
"The size of the existing swimming pool is 20mX40m. However, it is being developed into a 25mX50m one, which is the international standard," said district sports officer Sameer Naik.
"Besides, a new gallery, changing rooms and a filtration plant will also be constructed in the complex. Around Rs 3.5 crore will be spent on the project ," Naik said.
The kids' swimming pool, which was developed on the premises in 2008, will also get a facelift. The pool had been abandoned after it developed leaks in 2010. A management committee will run and maintain the swimming pool after the renovation. Hundreds of children and local residents, who used to frequent the pool, will be benefited by the renovation.
The pool, established in 1977, is the state's first competitive swimming pool. However, it had been lying in neglect since long. The local residents had been demanding for its renovation.
"The swimming pool is an asset for the city.. We are happy that steps are being taken for its renovation," said Debashis Mishra, a local youth.
"The swimming pool has a glorious past. I am happy that it will get a new lease of life," said Sanjaya Dash, a sports enthusiast.
