Bhubaneswar, April 11: Quitting a high-paid job to pursue a career in writing is a gamble that very few would take on. But, this alumnus of the Indian Institute of technology, Bhubaneswar, was confident of his skills and believed that the risk was worth taking.

Pramit Sarkar graduated from the institute in 2013 and landed up with a job in a reputed oil company. But within a few months of joining, he realised that his true calling was writing. "During my college days, I used to contribute a number of articles for the college newsletter, and it was then I honed my penchant for writing. I realised that to pursue the dream of becoming a writer, I needed to leave my job. I quit within a year and after a gap of few months began penning by ideas," said Pramit.

The novel, The Last Surge, is a tale of relationships. As the love story of the primary characters in the novel, Gabriel and Rimi, is nearing marriage, fate plays its vicious card. Rimi dumps Gabriel and marries the choice of her family, but Gabriel decides to remain single. And thus begins a tale of fate.

Asked whether experiences from his life had any influences on the novel, pat came his reply: "The characters, their lives and every incident that have shaped the novel are completely fictitious. But, it would be wrong to say that it's completely based on imagination, for the settings and background are inspired from whatever I have come across."

Although a native of Calcutta, Pramit had spent a chunk of his adolescence in Bhubaneswar.

"A lot of memories are associated with that place and its people. Although there's no influence on the novel, I must admit that the experiences in the city have been highly enriching for my psyche," said the Stewart School alumnus.

The novel is up for pre-ordering from an online shopping portal and the official release is slated for May 27.
