Bhubaneswar, March 3: A 25-year-old woman from Pathar Bandh slum at Vanivihar today succumbed to her burn injuries in Capital Hospital.
The woman sustained injuries last night after she set herself on fire at her shack in the slum following a quarrel with her husband. The fire also gutted three other shacks in the slum.
The woman, identified as Bishnu Priya Nayak (25), had been staying in the slum with her husband for the last two years. According to police, the woman set herself on fire after her husband fought with her in an inebriated state.
“Around 9 last night, we heard the couple quarrelling. After some time we saw that their shack was on fire and the woman was shouting for help. Residents of the slum rescued her, but by then she had sustained more than 60 per cent burn injuries. Soon the fire spread to other houses,” said Jyotsna Rani Mishra, the woman’s neighbour adding that the fire brigade was called which doused the fire, but not before it had gutted three other shacks in the slum.
The woman’s neighbours took her to Capital Hospital. Today, she succumbed to her injuries.
“She had sustained severe burn injuries, and so, could not be saved,” said a doctor at the hospital. Police said the husband and wife had regular quarrels over petty issues. They said that Bishnu Priya’s husband Ranjan Nayak, an auto-rickshaw driver in the city, would always cast aspersions on her character.
“Their married life was not happy at all. The husband was always suspicious of the woman’s character after an incident in their early married life,” said Jyotsna Rani.
The couple were from Ganjam district and had been staying here for the last two years after their marriage.
After receiving information about the case, the Saheed Nagar police went to the hospital and recorded Bishnu Priya’s statement. After the woman died in the hospital, police informed the family members of the deceased in Ganjam. The body remains in the hospital morgue as her relations were unable to reach the city today.
Police have detained the husband. “After the family members of the woman come here tomorrow and lodge a formal complaint, we will take further steps,” said a police officer. The body would be handed over to the family after a post-mortem tomorrow.
