Balangir: One woman died and five other suffered serious injuries in two separate incidents over family feuds in the district on Sunday.
Police have nabbed seven persons in the two cases and produced them before the court on Monday.
In the first incident, the police arrested five persons in connection with the death of Puspa Satnami, who was allegedly beaten to death by the family members of her neighbour in Kadobasa village in Kantabanjhi police limits.
The accused have been identified as Bhumisuta Satnami, Bijaya Satnami, Amrut Satnami, Prabhulal Satnami and Sarojini Satnami.
A police source said the incident occurred when Ramesh Satnami and his wife Puspa Satnami had an argument on Sunday night.
Bijaya Satnami's family members, who are the neighbours of the couple, intervened to stop them. However, the couple asked them not to interfere in their personal matter.
This further led to a scuffle between both families resulting in the death of Puspa and leaving her husband Ramesh injured.
Sub-divisional police officer of Kantabanjhi Prafulla Kumar Mishra said police had arrested five persons, including two women in connection with the case.
"The accused were produced before the court. They were remanded in judicial custody after their bail was rejected," he said.
In another incident, four members of a family in Ramasingha village in Loisingha police limits were seriously injured after they were attacked by a relative over land dispute. The police have arrested a father-son duo in this connection.
A source said Nityananda Tripathy had a dispute with his nephew Arakhita Tripathy over a plot of land.
There was persistent tension between both families due to the dispute. On Sunday, Arakhita's son Sujit attacked Nityananda and other family members with an axe. Two members of Nityananda's family got seriously injured and were admitted to the Medical College Hospital in Balangir.
Inspector in charge of Loisingha police station Lilima Lalita Barla said police had arrested Arakhita and his son Sujit. "The families had a rivalry over a land plot which is the reason behind the incident," Barla said.
