Keonjhar: A woman brutally assaulted her mother-in-law by a chopper in Telkoi police limits of the district.

The injured mother-in-law Jenamani Mahanta, 55, is undergoing treatment at the Keonjhar district headquarters hospital.

According to police, the incident occurred at Sarigida village on Friday.

The accused woman, Pinky Mohanta, 26, had differences with her mother-in-law for quite sometime. Both of them often picked up fights over petty domestic matters, police said quoting a neighbour.

"When she scolded Mohanta on Friday, the accused attacked her by a vegetable chopper in a fit of rage. The victim sustained wounds on her right arm, said sub divisional police officer Sriharsha Mishra.

There was nobody in the house when the incident took place. People living on the neighbourhood heard the woman screaming and came to rescue her.

"The accused had perpetrated the crime when her spouse had gone out of the station," Mishra said.

The woman has been booked under Section-307 (attempt to murder) and other relevant sections of Indian Penal Code. She was sent to the jail after court rejected her bail petition.

A couple of days ago, a similar case was reported in Jagatsinghpur district. A woman from Kujang police station area of Jagatsinghpur had been arrested after she allegedly poisoned her mother-in-law.
