Bhubaneswar, June 25: The municipal corporation is planning to install a second weighbridge at its garbage-dumping site near Sainik School to reduce time taken to measure vehicle load. This will also ensure faster removal of garbage.

This is important because the private companies carrying out the cleaning work for the corporation are paid according to volume of garbage lifted measured in tonnes.

The only weighbridge currently functioning at the garbage dumping yard near Sainik School does not always work properly and this delays the movement of vehicles carrying the garbage.

Sources said that very often the weighbridge breaks down because its load shelf - an electronic gadget fixed to the machine - gets damaged either by lightning or due to other reasons.

The private companies engaged in the job said around 100 trucks visit the dumping yard every day. Since there is only one weighbridge, it takes a long time to weigh the waste. Besides the only gate where the weighbridge is fixed makes it difficult for the vehicles to enter and exit from the yard. This also causes delay.

"The vehicles have to wait for hours to get the clearance to go out of the dumping yard to collect garbage again. That's why we have been demanding a second weighbridge, which will help quicken the process," said a private contractor.

Interestingly, the weighbridge at the dumping yard has been out of order for the past several days making it difficult to weigh the garbage-laden trucks. The machine is yet to be repaired, said sources.

The corporation has called for a tender seeking response from private parties for installing a new weighbridge at the dumping yard and for its maintenance for at least five years. It would also ask the private party setting up the new weighbridge to take care of the old one. "We have called for a tender and hope the problem will be sorted out soon," said city engineer Basant Kumar Parida.

Also, the condition of the road near the gate where the only weighbridge is fixed has become bad and needs to be fixed. The officials said that they were working on this aspect too.
