Jajpur: A youth married his beloved in the hospital after she had attempted suicide by swallowing sleeping pills.

The girl, identified as Prajnya Priadarsini Samal of Karilopatana in Patakura police limits in Kendrapara district, attempted suicide after the youth, Saroj Kumar Jena of Kabirpur village in Jajpur Sadar police limits, had refused to marry her.

Samal, a final-year degree student, is undergoing treatment at Area hospital in Jajpur Road and her condition is stated to be stable, hospital sources said.

Local police solemnised the marriage on the hospital premises.

The police said Jena had befriended Samal during a marriage function two years ago.

Later, Jena fell in love with her and they had been in a relationship for two years since then. Though Jena had allegedly promised to marry her, he backed off from the promise, the police said.

Later when Samal had come to know about Jena's engagement with another girl, she again asked him to marry her.

"The girl came to Jajpur Road where Jena works as an accountant in a private firm on Thursday. She asked him to marry her, but he rejected her proposal," said Jajpur Road police station inspector-in-charge Amitav Mohapatra.

Depressed over his decision, Samal took sleeping pills in an attempt to end her life on Thursday afternoon, said the police officer.

A little later, Samal fell down on the road at Vyas Nagar town and collapsed. Some passers-by witnessed this and rushed her to Area hospital.

Later acting on the tip-off, the police swung into action and picked up Jena from his work place.
