Bhubaneswar, Feb. 24: Police have collected a whopping Rs 3.32 crore from 66,160 violators under Odisha Urban Police (OUP) Act in 2014.
The annual crime report of 2014 compiled by the commissionerate police has revealed it.
The police said 90 per cent of crimes pertained to traffic violations. Besides, another 2,10,844 violators have been fined under Motor Vehicles (MV) Act in the twin cities.
The cops have collected a penalty of Rs 2.13 crore under MV Act. The police officials said minimum penalty under OUP Act is Rs 500 while the minimum penalty for traffic offence under MV Act is Rs 100.
In Cuttack, the police officials have penalised more than 1.1 lakh offenders, which is almost double that of 2013.
"We have been collecting fines against traffic violations in Cuttack," said a police official. Commuters riding without helmets constitute the majority of violators.
The cops attributed the increase in traffic violations to the rise in the number of vehicles in the twin cities.
"At present, the two cities have more than 17 lakh vehicles. Around 1.5 lakh vehicles are added every year. Besides, a number of people from other areas also visit these cities daily," said a police official.
Recently, the commissionerate police had launched sensor-based red light violation detection and automatic number plate recognition system at AG Square on February 6.
The red light violation detection system is equipped with sensors, which would automatically identify vehicles jumping red lights at the AG Square traffic signal while automatic number plate recognition system would zoom in on the number plate and capture it.
Police commissioner R.P. Sharma said the cops would continue to enforce traffic rules in the two cities.
"Strict enforcement of traffic rules has led to decrease in road mishaps. The number has come down from 284 in 2013 to 271 in 2014," said Sharma.
Earlier, the commissionerate police had proposed several measures to streamline violators. These include one additional crane for towing away illegally parked vehicles in Bhubaneswar, introduction of e-challan for traffic violators and additional manpower to regulate and enforce traffic rules in the twin cities.
Besides, the police are also planning to come up with two additional traffic police stations at Khandagiri and Rasulgarh in Bhubaneswar for better management.
