Bhubaneswar, Sept. 25: A proposed meeting between police and the Utkal University authorities was deferred today.
The authorities had decided to meet today to discuss the next course of action following a letter by police commissioner R.P. Sharma citing deterioration in law and order following sporadic incidents of violence on the campus.
"We may hold the meeting tomorrow or Monday," said postgraduate council chairman Ranjan Bal.
Elections had been cancelled at the university in 2012 and 2013. However, the poll was held in 2014 as the situation was favourable.
The uncertainty over polls notwithstanding, campaigning continued at the university, where students were promised everything from hostels for PhD and MPhil students, special placement cell, career counselling centres, research centres, campus beautification to two new gates at the VSS Nagar and Acharya Vihar exit points.
At present, around 50 police personnel are deployed on the campus to maintain law and order.
The poll frenzy continued in various other colleges despite today being a holiday for Id. Aspiring candidates are leaving no stone unturned to woo students.
The students' union elections would be held on October 14 and the results declared later that same afternoon.
