Bhubaneswar, June 15: City police has seized the mobile phones of the two accused who were arrested yesterday for allegedly raping an 18-year-old college girl in a moving vehicle.

One of the accused was identified as Manoranjan Sahu, a land dealer who used to visit the victim’s sister’s house in Phulanakhara area, where she had been staying for last two years.

The girl had complained that the accused also had video recorded while they were raping her. The police commissioner had told yesterday that they had not been able to seize these recorded documents. However, the deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Nitinjit Singh said today that they had seized the mobile phones of the accused. “These gadgets have been sent for examination,” said the DCP.

The forensic squad of the police today verified the vehicle in which the girl was raped. At the same time, police said the girl’s brother-in-law was being questioned.

The city was shocked when the matter came to public notice yesterday. The girl, a native of Pipli area, was returning to her sister’s house at Gababastar in Phulanakhara area on June 10. While she was waiting for her bus at Master Canteen area, accused Manoranjan approached her and offered her a lift in his vehicle. Unaware of the intention of the accused, she boarded the vehicle. After sometime, Manoranjan told her that he would drop his friend Ajay Malia, a poultry businessman who was also in the vehicle at Old Town area.

The girl was raped and the accused recorded the crime in his mobile phones. Later in the evening, Manoranjan dropped her at Phulanakhara Square and left for Cuttack.

Though the incident had occurred on June 10, the girl was very scared as the accused had threatened to kill her and circulate her nude photos. She narrated the matter to her sister on June 13 and lodged a complaint with the Mahila police. The police later arrested the accused and forwarded them to the court. The accused persons have been remanded in judicial custody.
