Bhubaneswar: Two cases of assault, including that of a traffic police personnel, rocked the city on Friday night and Saturday.
An mob thrashed two bike-borne goons at Bomikhal around 9.30pm on Friday. Sources said the duo snatched a bag from a woman in her late 40s near Kochilei Haat at Rasulgarh. She was riding pillion with her husband when the robbers snatched her bag. The woman and her husband fell from their motorcycle as a result and suffered injuries.
When the woman's husband raised an alarm, people from surrounding areas started chasing the goons and caught them near Bomikhal.
"We chased them after the man raised alarm. We caught them near Bomikhal and handed them over to police," said Rasulgarh resident Tutu Baliarsingh.
The cops identified the duo as Nakula Behera and Sahadev Bhoi from Puri district. "We arrested them and produced them in court on Friday. They have a prior criminal record and used to come to the city to conduct such activities," said a Mancheswar police station officer.
In another incident, a youth assaulted a traffic cops with a belt near Ravi Talkies Square on Saturday.
The incident was recorded in the body camera of the cop, who has lodged a complaint with the traffic outpost near AG Square.
Sources said the unidentified youth violated traffic norms at the square. The traffic cop caught him and a heated argument ensued between the duo.
Shortly after, the youth called some of his friends and beat up the cop with his belt when they arrived.
Police commissioner Y.B. Khurania said action would be taken after investigation. "We will investigate the matter and take action. This kind of nuisance will not be tolerated. I have directed officers to initiate the enquiry with eyewitnesses and take action," said Khurania.
