Bhubaneswar: Laying the turf at Kalinga Stadium is almost complete ahead of the Men's Hockey World Cup scheduled to take place in November. A review of progress of other related works will be held on July 25.

A sports department official said constriction of additional galleries for the event was also in full swing and would be completed shortly.

"Construction work is on in full swing despite rain lashing the city. We have asked the contractors to complete the work according to schedule," said a department official.

The department has also decided to redesign and modify the floodlight system of the stadium following the norms of the International Hockey Federation (FIH). Earlier, the required levels were 2,000 LUX (index to measure light intensity), which has been revised to 2,400 LUX. Department officials said the hockey stadium inside Kalinga Sport Complex had flood lighting system of 2,200 LUX. The four towers of the floodlight system have currently 168 bulbs, which would be increased to 176 bulbs. "Two additional bulbs would be installed at each tower to increase the lighting. The work would cost around Rs 34 lakh. The position of the towers would not be altered," said a department official.

Thirty-six matches would be played during the tournament. The opening match would be played between Belgium and Canada on November 28 while hosts India are scheduled to start their campaign the same day taking on South Africa. The host country will play its next two pool matches against Belgium and Canada on December 2 and 8 respectively.

The Kalinga Sports Complex had earlier hosted Champions Trophy in 2014 and Men's Hockey World League Final in December last year.
