Bhubaneswar, Aug. 3: Come Saturday, the urban development authority will take to street arts to teach people various road safety skills.
The programme, "Road Safety Improvement: A Lighter, Quicker and Cheaper Approach", will be held at Rupali Square tomorrow and day after. Traffic experts, citizens, volunteers and artists will take part in the event to create a model traffic intersection at Rupali Square on Janpath.
The model will initially be implemented on a pilot basis at Rupali Square, one of the busiest junctions of the city. If the feedback comes positive, the Bhubaneswar Development Authority will replicate it in other junctions, including those on Janpath.
Smart Janpath is an ambitious project presently under execution under the Smart Cities Mission. Intersections will be painted with various colours as part of the programme to draw the commuters' attention towards lane driving. Also, safety rules will be followed by using cones and barricading structures.
"After a daylong discussion on the road safety measures with various stakeholders, we have come up with the plan. We have included officials from the civic body, police, works and transport departments and volunteers to make it successful," said the authority's vice-chairman Krishan Kumar.
During the discussion, members from the Road Safety Society of the transport department, Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited and several child leaders agreed on a final design of the model for Rupali Square. The volunteers and artists will begin shaping the junction at 10pm on Friday and it will continue till 4am on Saturday.
"The World Resources Institute will be the knowledge partner in this project, which will be implemented during the night hours and continue beyond midnight so that people could come and experience a surprise with elements of road safety at Rupali Square after waking up the next morning. This model will remain at the square for more than 30 days," said Kumar.
Officials are also planning to keep tabs on implementation of the model and identify vulnerable groups of road-users to help establish the necessity of looking beyond the conventional remedies of reducing road fatalities.
It will also explain the tools and techniques used in assessing the safety.#"The commonly used signs on social media will be painted on the road to make an impact. Implementing the design at the intersection to create safe urban streets, empower people to build public spaces and encourage creative ideas for safer roads are the objectives of the live workshop," said mayor Ananta Narayan Jena.
Artists associated with the city beautification programme have agreed to take part in the midnight road activity at Rupali Square.
Similar initiatives have already taken up at Vijay Char Rasta in Ahmedabad, Bandra intersection in Mumbai and T.V. Swamy Junction and D.B. Road in Coimbatore.
