A honey badger (Mellivora capensis) has been sighted at Samantiapalli village in Berhampur forest division.
"This is for the first time that this creature has been spotted in the Berhampur forest division," said Berhampur divisional forest officer Asish Kumar Behera. The honey badger is known for its fearless nature.
The animal, which has few natural predators, dares to stand up against the likes of tigers and lions and is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, said the DFO."Local villagers had trapped a male honey badger, around two-and-a-half feet in length when it entered Bauri Sahi from the nearby Samantiapalli forest on Thursday night.
The creature was trapped unhurt and kept in a cage. They informed us on Friday morning. We went there and were amazed to see a honey badger. We took some pictures of it and released it into the nearest forest," said Behera. Text by Sunil Patnaik, picture by Gopal Krushna Reddy
