Cuttack, May 14: Tension gripped CDA Sector VI in Markatnagar following the death of married woman at her residence last night.
The deceased, identified as Sujata Paikra, 25, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling clamp in her bedroom.
However, Sujata's family members alleged she had been killed by her in-laws and demanded a detail probe.
"It is a pre-planned murder as we could easily see injury marks on her hands, face and other parts of the body. However, there were no substantial marks in her neck, which implies that she has been killed," said Sujata's brother Manas Ranjan Paikra.
Paikra said Sujata's in-laws had informed about the incident at around 9.30 pm on Wednesday night. Later, we found that her in-laws had already cut the dupatta and her body was lying on the bed.
Forensic experts visited the spot today. Markatnagar police have already detained Sujata's husband Gautam Swain and a case has been registered in connection with the incident.
A member of Sujata's family said she married Gautam Swain in August last year. Gautam, who works as a supervisor at private company in Cuttack, used to assault her and put pressure on her for more dowry.
"Sujata's in-laws were repeatedly demanding a car and an air-conditioner and there were disturbances between the couple over the issue at regular intervals. It was only 15 days since Sujata had returned to her in-laws place at CDA following a heated argument with her husband," said a member of Sujata's family.
"I have no information why Sujata ended her life. She was standing near the balcony on the second floor at around 5.30 pm. Since she did not come downstairs for the preparation of dinner, I called my husband and found her body hanging from the ceiling," said Laxmipriya Swain, Sujata's mother-in-law.
Swain said Sujata usually used to come down to prepare dinner at around 8pm after watching TV serials, and there was no way of knowing that she would take this extreme step.
A police official said the in-laws had claimed ignorance about the incident. However, the door of Sujata's room was wide open and a beer bottle, along with some medicines, has been recovered from the room.
