Bhubaneswar/Cuttack, Sept. 7: The annual income of Surendra Mishra alias Sura baba was around Rs 3 crore that mainly included money offerings by devotees, a crime branch source said today.
The self-styled spiritual leader was arrested on September 1 on several charges including possession of illegal firearms and molestation
The agency officials said that Trahi Achyuta Ashram located at Jhinti on Bhubaneswar outskirts was collecting huge amount of money as donation from devotees. Besides, the investigating agency has also found that Mishra was not paying income tax.
Police have seized Rs 40 lakh cash from the ashram premises during a search operation, besides recovering bank deposits worth more than Rs 3 crore.
"A large part of his revenue was also garnered through the real estate business managed by the baba and his two sons," said a crime branch official.
The agency has also found a personal locker at a nationalised bank in Bhubaneswar. The sleuths have also found that Mishra owned land in various parts of the state, including Baripada. Balasore, Jajpur, Bhadrak and Rourkela.
In a related development, the judicial magistrate first class, Bhubaneswar, today granted the crime branch three-day additional remand of baba's elder son Trilochan, 40. The baba and his elder son Biranchi, however, were sent to Jharpada jail after their bail pleas were rejected.
Crime branch officials said that Trilochan was handling all the financial transactions of the main ashram. As he had provided a lot of information , it is expected that the investigating agency would be ale to extract more from him during his remand.
Sura baba had a wide network of ashrams at 30 places in Odisha and three places in Bihar and Bengal. A crime branch team today reached Mumbai to probe into the allegation of land fraud against his ashram located about 10km from Borivili in Mumbai.
