Bhubaneswar, Sept. 24: The principal and four teachers of Navodaya Vidyalaya in Nayagarh, where hostel boarders had accused a teacher of sexual harassment, have been asked to report to the institution’s Bhopal office.
A team of officials from Bhopal is scheduled to visit the school and talk to various people about the allegations.
The principal of the Puri branch of Navodaya Vidyalaya has been given the additional charge of the Nayagarh school. Most of the hostel boarders are said to have left the hostel after allegations were made by a group of 36 students. Sources said a team led by the deputy commissioner of the regional office of the Navodaya Vidyalaya groups at Bhopal would be visiting the campus. This was confirmed by principal of the school Hussain Ayappa.
Tension gripped the school following allegations on Friday that computer teacher Chandra Sekhar Choudhury had allegedly been sexually abusing them for the last year and a half. Choudhury used to beat them up whenever they resisted his attempts and issued threats.
The computer teacher, who was appointed on a contract basis, fled from Nayagarh and was arrested by Berhampur police on Sunday.
Sources said a medical examination was conducted on Choudhury in the district headquarters hospital today to ascertain the claims of sexual harassments by the boys.
These students had informed four teachers of the school about the matter earlier. The teachers as well as the principal had not taken action.
The principal said the parents of some of the students today took away their wards. “When the news spread, they wanted to take their children home for a few days. We allowed them to take the boys. The situation is becoming normal. The sub-collector visited the school yesterday,” said Ayappa.
Besides, the examination for Class VII students that was to be held from October 3 has been postponed by seven days.
Collector of Nayagarh Murlikant Barrick said he visited the school today. “The children told me about the incident. We have taken steps,” said Barik.
