DAV School of Business Management organised a management event known as DSBM Genesis-2014 on last Wednesday. Students of more than 40 leading schools and junior colleges took part in the business quiz, paper presentation, Admad show (related to advertisements) and pictures speak competitions organised on this occasion. The objective of the event was to create a platform for commerce students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. Out of four teams that qualified for the final round of business quiz, DAV Public School, Chandrashekharpur, emerged winners while Guru Nanak School, Sambalpur, was runners-up. DAV Public School Jindal clichéd the winner’s trophy in paper presentation session, while DAV public school Rourkela won the Admad Show. DAV Public School, Chandrashekharpur, stood second in Admad show and won the Pictures Speak contest. Professor R.K. Bal of Utkal University, who was chief guest of the event, stressed upon importance of daily reading for students.
Annual convocation
The second annual convocation of the International Management Institute, Bhubaneswar, was held on Wednesday on its campus in which postgraduate diplomas were conferred to the successful students of the 2012-14 batch. Chief minister Naveen Patnaik graced the event as the chief guest and delivered the convocation address and presented the Rama Prasad Goenka Best Student Award and gold medal to Jubin Joseph for his outstanding performance in the PGDM (post graduate diploma in management) batch 2012-14. The director’s medal for overall contribution to the institute was given to Bibhu Prasad Rath. Higher education minister Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy honoured him with the medal. Over 300 dignitaries from academia, senior government officials, leaders from the corporate sectors along with the members of board of governors of the institute as well as the parents of the graduating students attended the event.
Audition time
Hosts of auditions for Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA) University were organised on the campus of the Institute of Technical Education and Research. Around 80 students were selected from 600 for the fashion show that will be held in the cultural festival of the university called Genesis in January. The fashion club of the university ‘En Vogue’ organised the elaborate audition programme. Besides, the dance club, Danza, also conducted an audition. The music club of the university was not left behind. They organised an audition for musical talents, who will perform during the cultural festival. The literary club organised an audition programme for anchors. The photography club Virtual Showreel is the photography partner of these events. In January, the university organises a popular technical festival known as Chakravyuh along with a cultural festival called Genesis.
Cleanliness drive
Students of Utkal University along with Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officials conducted a massive cleanliness drive on the campus premises on November 21. Led by the Students’ Union president of the university, Rajeshraj Swain, the students swept the classrooms and other unused areas of the university campus. The main focus was on cleaning the university bylanes that are r arely looked upon and have turned into unsafe zones with thick bush and thorny plants. The university vice chancellor Ashok Kumar Das, along with local MLA Priyadarshini Mishra and mayor Ananta Narayan Jena joined hands to clean the campus.
Protest cry
Students of Remuna College staged a protest against the appointment of the president of college management committee. Students, parents and local people have been opposing former MLA Sudarshan Jena and demanding his removal from the president’s post. The agitating students stated that the appointment for the post shouldn’t be given on the basis of political consideration. They also alleged that Jena had no contribution for the college during his tenure between 2009 and 2014. They further demanded on the merit basis one educationist from the local area should be given appointment for the post. While there have been discontentment among the students over the issue, on Monday they boycott the classes and sat on dharana. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the high education department urging to consider their demand.
Musical event
The annual event of Rourkela Institute of Management Studies (RIMS) was celebrated between November 19 and 21 on the campus amidst lots of fun and frolic. The institute that observes its events in a unique style organised an Astaprahari-a kirtan programme during this three-day event. On the first day, the Adhivasa was held when the students and faculty members together fetched water from Brahmani river. The Astaprahari started on the morning of second day after installation of Ghata and eight troupes had been called from different places for such purpose. A spiritual atmosphere pervaded the campus. Prior to the annual event, different competitions among students ranging from sports to literary, arts to dance had been organised and the winning students were awarded. In the evening over 2,000 persons participated in the Ananda Bazar an open fest. Finally, next day morning the ‘Nagar Kirtan’ started where again the students and faculty participated. After the completion of this ritual the ‘Dahi Handi’ was broken and then started the ‘Mud Play’. Later all joined for the final lunch.
Blood donation
Students of the botany department in the College of Basic Science and Humanities under the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) cleaned their laboratory as part of ‘Swachha Lab Abhiyan’ on Saturday. Realising a cleaner laboratory is the best place to conduct experiments and boost innovation among themselves, students under the guidance of their teachers carried out the cleanliness drive with great care. It was the second year Plus Three students who took the lead in the cleanliness drive and others followed. Besides, a blood donation camp was also organised on the campus of the college by the students’ union in collaboration with a private bank. Students in large numbers participated in this camp and 105 units of blood were collected from the blood donation camp. Manoranjan Kar, the vice-chancellor of OUAT had inaugurated the blood donation camp.
