Bhubaneswar/Cuttack, Sept. 29: Candidates filed their nominations for students' union elections scheduled on October 5 amid tight security though incidents of violence were reported from some institutes.
In Bhubaneswar, tension ran high at Capital Law College when students locked up the main gate not allowing aspirants to file nominations. They protested against the abrupt revocation of sine die closure by the college authorities. However, another group staged a road blockade on NH-16 demanding elections. Police later removed them.
Capital Law College authorities had closed the institute sine die on Tuesday citing "disturbances and student unrest on the campus." It was, however, lifted last evening after a series of protests by students who demanded polls.
At BJB Autonomous College, a group of students burnt tyres as a mark of protest against the cancellation of elections. "They should have at least held the polls for the junior college. We were not involved in any violence," said Khitish Jena, a student.
The BJB College authorities had announced an indefinite closure of the college last evening and asked the boarders to vacate the hostels.
Tension was also witnessed at Utkal University after the authorities allowed a student to file his nominations after noon. The nominations were supposed to be filed between 9am and noon.
At Ramadevi University, candidates arrived with their supporters to file their nominations in processions and it was done peacefully.
Adequate police force was deployed on campuses to ward off violence. In Cuttack, the candidates of Ravenshaw University, Sailabala Women's College and Christ College filed their nominations amid tight security.
"Of the 8,000 students at Ravenshaw, over 60 per cent students are girls. But they are not getting their due recognition. I am going to work for them," said Aiswarya Mohapatra, an aspirant for the post of president at the university. Tight security arrangements were made by the authorities to maintain peace on the campus.
