Cuttack, Oct. 10: Protesting against the alleged attack on some students of M.S. Law College and inaction of police to book those involved in the violence, students of different colleges today staged a protest at College Square.
Demanding immediate arrest of local MLA Pravat Biswal, who was allegedly involved in the violence, the students burnt his effigy and raised slogans against him.
“No action has been taken against Biswal. We demand stern action against him for the trouble following the college elections,” said Hari Shankar Rout, former students’ union president of Ravenshaw University.
Large-scale violence had erupted following the students’ union election on September 29. The house of Biju Chhatra Janata Dal vice-president Byomokesh Ray was allegedly ransacked by some students of the opponent group of the same party.
Both the leaders had fielded candidates at different colleges for the students’ union election. It is alleged that the attack was the fallout of the ongoing fissures among several BJD students’ union leaders. The students had also ransacked M.S. Law College and attacked two students.
Though a police complaint was lodged and few students and outsiders were arrested, they were later released on bail. However, the students alleged that despite Biswal’s name being mentioned in the FIR, no action had been taken against him so far.
