Angul, Jan.7: There was no coal production and supply for two consecutive days in the Mahanadi Coalfield Limited (MCL) due to the ongoing workers' strike.

The company, however, made unsuccessful attempts to run some mines with the help of police. The workers are on strike in protest against the central government's decision to bring in an ordinance to auction coal mines.

Four trade unions have come together and are opposing the government move. No coal went out of the MCL mines to any power station.

'MCL incurs a financial loss to the tune of Rs 15 crore per day and the Odisha government faces a loss of Rs 4.2 crore in form of royalty. Today the strike paralysed production and supply from all the mines of the MCL spreading over the districts of Angul, Jharsuguda and Sundargarh. The state government has assured us support to resume coal output and despatch,' said the MCL director (technical) A.K. Tiwari.

He said: 'It is unfortunate that while other companies of Coal India Limited such as South Eastern Coalfield Limited produced coal more or less during the current strike there was no production in MCL, which is worrying us.'

'We are trying to run some of the mines, but everywhere thereisresistance,' said Talcher sub-divisional police officer Kailsah Chandra Parida.

S.C. Pradhan, convenor of trade union coordination committee, said: 'We will continue to paralyse the mining work till January 10, as per the call by our central leaders.'
