Berhampur, Nov. 17: Inspector in-charge of Jarada police station Krushna Chandra Das is in the line of fire for allegedly kicking a nine-month-old pregnant woman.

As a result, Mami Adhikari, 36, of Bada Brahmana Sahi in Patrapur under Jarada police station, gave birth to a stillborn child at MKCG Hospital.

Mami alleged that Krushna Chandra Das came to her house on October 25 at 1am to arrest her husband, Kunja Adhikari, in connection with a case.

“I was about to open the door, when the inspector kicked it with great force and it hit me hard. I was writhing in pain when the police officer again hit my belly with his baton. The health staff, who examined me on October 29 at Patrapur community health centre, said that the pain I was suffering from was due to the injury I sustained on October 25. The inspector in charge of Jarada police station is responsible for my situation,” said Mami.

A group of villagers, along with the woman’s husband, met Amitav Thakur, the deputy inspector-general of police, southern range, and demanded action against Das.

The DIG has ordered the deputy superintendent of crime to investigate the matter and report to him within three days.

Mystery over death

Police are trying to ascertain the reason behind the death of a 22-year-old newly-wed woman of Daha village in Bhanjanagar. They have seized her ashes from the cremation ground.

“The deceased, Sulochana, recently got married to Kanhu Nayak of Balakiari under Beleguntha block. She had come to her paternal house four days ago. She committed suicide on Sunday. The family members cremated her without informing the police,” said the sub-divisional police officer of Bhanjanagar, Ramesh Chandra Sethi.

However, according to some villagers, Sulochana was staying at her maternal uncle’s house at Balakiari. After the death of her mother, her father again married. Whenever she came to Daha village to see her father, there used to be frequent quarrels with her stepmother.

On Saturday, too, the two had a bitter exchange of words, they said.

“The police are interrogating her husband, father and maternal uncle,” said Sethi.
