Bhubaneswar, Feb. 4: Adivasi Mela, the annual fair of tribal communities here, not only boasts of ethnic crafts, but is also a cultural cauldron.

The cultural extravaganza that unfolds every evening is a blend of colourful dance and vibrant music presented by different tribal groups of the state.

The tribal dance forms presents a glimpse into the social and cultural lifestyle of the communities. From accessories and clothes to the rituals portrayed in the dance, the tribal artistes replicate their traditions on stage in the most authentic manner.

Among dance forms featured at the Adivasi Mela are the Kolha dance of Karanjia, Kutia Kandha dance of Belghar, Kisan dance of Kuchinda, Lanjia Saora dance of Puttasing, Desia Kandha dance of Balliguda and tribal folk dances performed by the tribal students of Indira Gandhi Womens’ Hostel of Rama Devi Womens’ College, Bhubaneswar.

The Kutia Kandha dancers of Belghar did a sequence of their traditional dance styles performed on the occasion of Meria Parab, Onka Parab and marriage. The dance of the Kisan tribe was combinations of their Jhapi, Karma, Jhumer and marriage dance forms, all of which are a must during their social gatherings.

“Our rich tribal heritage is such a cultural ensemble! Sadly, we hardly get to see or know about their lifestyle. My friends and I have been visiting everyday to enjoy the evening performances,” said Manmath Rout, an engineering student. The fair continues till February 9.
