Talcher, March 2: The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is going to generate 10-megawatt (MW) power from solar plants installed on its Kaniha campus near here.

The solar plants are part of renewable energy projects of NTPC and would provide power for its internal use.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), a Central government-owned power plant equipment manufacturer, has been awarded the turnkey contract and is undertaking the construction of the Rs 60-crore solar plant since July last year. They will also maintain the solar power plants for one year.

The solar plants are being constructed at Stage-II Township and Patharmunda, which is located on the main plant campus with installed capacity of eight MW and two MW, respectively.

NTPC executive director, V.B. Fadnavis said that this solar photovoltaic (SPV) plant would generate 14.1 million units of electricity annually.

“This electricity will be equivalent to the power requirement of approximately 12,000 households. With zero pollution, this plant will contribute 13,982 tonnes reduction in carbon dioxide generation,” said Fadnavis.

Fadnavis said that the super thermal power plant has an installed capacity of 3,000MW and it would be expanded with two more units of 660MW each.

“There are certain government procedures and the process is going on,” he said.

Kaniha super-thermal plant at present produces 3,000MW through its six units. Odisha gets a share of 41.80 per cent power generated by NTPC.
