Bhubaneswar, Aug. 19: The schedule for college elections is yet to be announced, but reports of pre-poll violence have already started pouring in from the institutions.
Today two such incidents took place at different colleges in the capital.
Six students were injured, one of them seriously, in a clash at Maharshi College of Natural Law at Saheed Nagar. Sources said two groups of students supported by rival political parties clashed on the college campus over elections.
Police said the situation was still tense but steps were being taken to defuse the situation. One platoon of police has been deployed on campus.
The injured were identified as Durga Prasad Sarangi, Lenkan Pattnaik, Sanjay Sahu and Kumud Behera from one group and Karuna Rout and Krishna from the other group. Durga Prasad has been seriously injured. He said he was going for readmission when around 20 students from the rival group attacked him with bricks and daggers.
“They have been trying to attack me for the past few days. They had even threatened me yesterday. Today, five students of our college along with some outsiders attacked me,” said Sarangi.
Sarangi’s friends too were attacked. Saheed Nagar police arrived at the spot and rushed the injured to hospital. Later, Sarangi lodged a complaint with the Saheed Nagar police.
However, students from the other group complained that Sarangi and his friends first attacked them. Karunakar Rout lodged a complaint against Sarangi and his friends.
“We are trying to make the campus violence free, but the students are not co-operating. If this continues, the higher authorities will be informed,” said Madan Mohan Sahu, the college principal, adding that it might lead to cancellation of elections like last year.
In the other incident, two groups of students clashed in Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar (BJB). Although no one was injured , police were deployed on the campus.
