Security beefed up for Pranab Puri visit

Police have made elaborate security arrangements for President Pranab Mukherjee's two-day visit to the state beginning tomorrow. This will be his fourth trip to Odisha since assuming the highest office of the country.

Bhubaneswar, Aug. 6: Police have made elaborate security arrangements for President Pranab Mukherjee's two-day visit to the state beginning tomorrow. This will be his fourth trip to Odisha since assuming the highest office of the country.

Senior police officials said around 90 platoons of police would be deployed at various places, including Raj Bhavan in Puri, where the President would spend the night tomorrow.

Mukherjee is scheduled to arrive at Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar at 1.45pm on Friday and fly directly to Rameswar at Khurda to attend the golden jubilee programme of Rameswar High School.

The police said since the President would fly to Rameswar, security arrangements would be made at the venue.

After attending the programme, he will fly back to Puri around 3.30pm. As soon as his helicopter lands at Talabania, Puri police would take charge of his security arrangements. After taking rest at Raj Bhavan, he will visit the temple in the evening. He is scheduled to spend the night at Raj Bhavan.

Puri police superintendent Ashis Singh said tight security arrangements had been made from Talabania to Raj Bhavan and the Jagannath temple.

The Jagannath temple administration and the priests are waiting anxiously for the President. During the President's visit to the temple, there would be restriction on other devotees' entry into the shrine. The cooks at Raj Bhavan also said they were waiting to serve the best possible dishes to the first citizen of the country.

On August 8, the President will fly directly to Cuttack and attend an event at National Law University (NLU) in the forenoon. After the event, he will leave Cuttack around 12.20pm and would arrive in Bhubaneswar at 12.40pm.

After reaching Bhubaneswar, he will be stay at the governor's house before leaving for KIIT, where he will attend a seminar on legal matters at 4pm. Around 6pm, he will leave for the airport and depart to Delhi.

The police also held mock drills in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack to ensure safe movement of the cavalcade of the President.

Police commissioner R.P. Sharma said that around 33 platoons of police forces would be deployed in Bhubaneswar along the route of the President while around 30 platoons would be deployed in Cuttack.

"We have made elaborate arrangements in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack for security and traffic movement during the President's visit. Besides, police in civil clothes, bomb disposal squad and dog squad would also be on standby at the venues," said the police commissioner.
