Bhubaneswar: Pushpalata Das, a 48-year-old woman, was allegedly killed apparently for resisting a robbery bid at Chandrakot village in Delanga police limits in Puri on Saturday night.
The incident took place when the son of the deceased, Laxmidhar, had gone to Bhubaneswar for some work and the woman was alone in her house.
"I reached home around 12.30am, but my mother did not open the gate. So, I scaled the wall and entered the house by breaking a window, only to find that the rooms were ransacked. I found my mother lying unconscious in the bathroom. Her hands and legs were tied and mouth was also gagged with a tape. I also found the gold ornaments and cash missing," alleged Laxmi-dhar, who runs a mobile shop in the locality.
Pushpalata was rushed to Sakhigopal Hospital, where she was declared received dead. "There was no external injury mark on the body. So, we suspect the woman died of suffocation as her mouth was gagged. We are waiting for the post-mortem report," said a police officer.
"We are trying to ascertain the amount of money and gold ornaments stolen by the go-ons. We are also trying to find out whether loot was the only motive," said inspector in charge of Delang police station Dayanidhi Nayak.
