Bhubaneswar, Aug. 3: Police have arrested two members of a robbers' gang.
Two others were also taken into custody for receiving the loot from the robbers. Moreover, the police seized 220g of gold ornaments, 100g silver, two laptops, three mobile phones and two wristwatches from them last night.
The criminals were identified as Nalu Swain, 34, from Beguniabasta in Puri and K. Simadri alias Tamada, 22, who hails from Palasa in Andhra Pradesh and is staying at Raghunathpur in the Infocity police limits.
However, the third gang member, Niranjan Swain alias Nanda, 36, is still at large. The receivers of the loot, Ashok Kumar Sahoo, 32, and Prakash Sahoo, 28, belong to Puri.
Police commissioner R.P. Sharma said the cops had zeroed in on the gang while investigating the loot case at Indraprastha Colony in the Airfield police limits here on July 29.
"The gang members used to come from Puri by bus and get down at Kalpana Square and boarded a hotel at Bapuji Nagar. From there, they used to plan their modus operandi. They would choose random houses and loot by terrorising residents with sharp weapons and fire arms," said Sharma.
The goons would defecate in the houses of their victims to mislead the watchdogs.
A cop said both Nalu and Nanda had many cases of loot, robbery, rape and arms trading pending against them. Over 55 cases, including rape, were pending against the duo at several police stations. They were involved in 16 criminal cases lodged at Chandrasekharpur police station.
On July 31, the police had busted an inter-state gang and arrested 14 goons. Most of them belonged to Moradapur in Madhya Pradesh.
The gang was involved in robbery cases, including one at the residence of Jaswant Debadutta, owner of Samrat Talkies, on July 18.
The cops had seized cash worth Rs 1.78 lakh, 210 grams of gold, gold ornaments weighing 150 grams, and 4kg of silver ornaments from the gang.
