Bhubaneswar, Dec. 15: Eight armed dacoits broke into the house of a senior bank officer at Lingipur last night and decamped with cash and valuables worth Rs 5 lakh.
The goons, who had their faces covered with handkerchiefs, tied the hands and legs of Girish Das, 56, and his wife with clothes before fleeing.
The couple was asleep when the robbers entered the house by breaking open the window grill around 1.30pm.
"They threatened us with sharp weapons and forced my wife to hand over her ornaments. Later, they tied up our hands and legs," said Das, who works at Co-operative Bank, Satya Nagar.
Das said the robbers ransacked the cupboards and decamped with Rs 40,000 in cash, gold ornaments weighing around 100gm and other valuables, including the couple's mobiles phones.
After collecting the valuables, the goons ate fruits kept in the refrigerator and drank liquor, Das said. They forced the couple to hand over their car keys but did not take it.
They were talking among themselves in Hindi, said Das.
The banker lodged a complaint with the Dhauli police station. A scientific team visited the spot to gather evidence.
Police suspect the involvement of a gang from outside the state.
