Bhubaneswar, June 30: The state's natural calamity committee today met and reviewed the disaster preparedness of the administration.
After the meeting, chaired by chief minister Naveen Patnaik, the state's disaster management minister Bijoyshree Routray said: "The government is fully prepared to face any eventuality. Apart from officials, representatives of all political parties, including Opposition leader Narasingha Mishra, attended the meeting.
Mishra, however, told newspersons that the government should not be complacent based on official papers. It should rather examine the ground reality and get prepared accordingly.
At the meeting, Naveen said the administration should get prepared to face both drought and flood as the state would receive deficient rainfall.
The chief minister directed the agriculture department to draw up a contingency plan and make a "necessary crop planning" to face the possible drought.
Agriculture minister Pradeep Maharathy said his department was ready with a contingency plan in the event of crop failure. "We will provide necessary input for raising alternative crop," he said.
Director of the regional meteorology centre Sarat Chandra Sahu said most parts of the state had received very good rainfall barring a few coastal districts. While eight districts (Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Khurda, Puri, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Dhenkanal and Nayagarh) have received deficient rainfall by 69 to 27 per cent, the remaining 22 districts recorded more than normal rainfall.
Sahu said that no dry spell was forecast for the next one week. Light to moderate rainfall was likely to occur across the state and location wise heavy rainfall may occur due to cyclonic circulation.
The chief minister asked the water resources department to strengthen weak river embankments and repair all the breaches caused by the previous floods.
The meeting also reviewed the preparedness of the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force and the fire service organisation. He advised the officials to keep enough food stock and emergency materials ready for the vulnerable and inaccessible pockets.
Naveen said in the meeting that the state had declared lightning, whirlwind, tornado, heat wave, heavy rain, boat accident, drowning and snake bite as state-specific disasters. Barring the death due to heat wave, ex gratia to the tune of Rs 4 lakh would be given to the next of the kins of the decased, he said.
