Cuttack, Aug. 7: A large portion of false ceiling inside the annexe hall No. 1 of Seven Pillars of Wisdom collapsed at Ravenshaw University here today. No one was injured.
The incident occurred while a debate competition was on as part of the Independence Day celebrations at the university.
Around 40 students from various schools and colleges from the city, along with their guardians, were inside the hall when the incident happened.
“We have submitted a written complaint to the vice-chancellor for appropriate action,” said Sanjay Satpathy, dean of students’ welfare. The incident has raised concerns over the quality of work undertaken at the Seven Pillars of Wisdom.
The Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Idco) is carrying out the entire construction as well as the necessary work for interiors inside the Ravenshaw Convention Centre.
Besides, concerns are also expressed over the safety of students as the varsity’s seventh annual convocation will be held at the main auditorium of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, also called the Ravenshaw Convention Centre, on August 23.
Chief minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the convention centre in December last year.
The total cost of construction of the convention centre has been pegged at Rs 17.83 crore, while the state government has provided nearly Rs 6 crore for the project.
There are two annexe halls at the centre with the seating capacity of 300 each, while the main auditorium can accommodate over 1,000 people.
Ravenshaw University’s major events, including the Indian History Congress annual convocation, were also held at the centre. Besides, the first annual convocation of National Law University, Odisha, was also organised here.
“We have already submitted a complaint with the senior officials of Idco, while we will also lodge an FIR in connection with such incident inside the varsity,” said vice-chancellor B.C. Tripathy.
