Balasore, Nov. 9: A college girl, who was allegedly gangraped last month by her male friend and three others, has been admitted to the district headquarters hospital after her health deteriorated.

The victim, a Plus Three student of a Balasore college, hails from Dahamunda in Bhograi block. Ever since the incident, the girl went into trauma and seemed to have lost her mental balance. Her condition worsened over the last two weeks and she was admitted to hospital.

“She was undergoing general treatment in the medicine ward here, but it seems that she is going through mental depression. We would refer her to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for treatment by specialists,” said chief district medical officer Iqbal Ahmed, adding that it was difficult to ascertain if the victim had psychological problems earlier.

“This can only be figured out after a thorough examination is conducted by a psychiatrist,” he said.

District collector Akhil Bihari Ota said the girl’s treatment expenses would be borne by the Red Cross Society.

“She should be shifted to Cuttack for special treatment according to the doctors’ opinion here. The district headquarters hospital would make all necessary arrangements in this regard,” Ota said.

As the victim undergoes treatment, the accused named by her, are on the run and police guards have been deployed at the hospital for the safety of the victim.

“We have deployed guards for her security. Squads have been formed and raids have been carried out even outside the state to nab the culprits but they are still at large,” said deputy superintendent of police Dhiren Chandra Nanda. However, her mother said the police were handling the sensitive case in a casual manner.

Amid growing agitations by students of different colleges and other political forums condemning police inaction and demanding the arrest of the culprits, the officer in-charge of the police station dealing with the case has been suspended and the inspector in-charge has been transferred.

The victim’s parents said she used to go to college with her male friend, Raghunath alias Bapunu Das, 21, on his motorbike and they were aware of it. But on October 13, she did not return home. Her phone was switched off and her family members could not trace her.

Two days later, she was found unconscious under a banyan tree near Pancharukhi in Baliapal. She was in a state of delirium and was repeatedly murmuring Bapunu’s name. The victim’s family is suspecting that Bapunu and some of his friends have raped her.
