Bhubaneswar, June 14: Two persons, allegedly involved in the gangrape of an 18-year-old girl in a moving car on June 10, were today sent to jail after their bail plea had been rejected by a local court here.
The accused picked up the girl in a moving vehicle near the Master Canteen Square.
The accused — Manoranjan Sahu alias Bapu (35) and Ajay Malia alias Tima (34) — were known to the girl’s family.
They were arrested last night. While Manoranjan hails from Machhua Bazar in Cuttack, Ajay is from Old Town area of the capital.
Police said the accused were subjected to medical examination.
The girl was medically examined yesterday.
According to police commissioner B.K. Sharma, the girl lodged complaint on Monday with the Mahila police station. The special squad conducted raids at various places and arrested Manoranjan, a land dealer from Cuttack, and Malia from Unit IV area.
“We have seized the vehicle in which the crime was committed. It has been verified,” said Sharma. The police said the girl, who hails from Pipili area, had been staying with her sister in Gababastar village near Phulanakhara and studied in the Brahman Jharilo College on the city outskirts.
The girl, in her complaint, said she was returning from her village on Friday to her sister’s house. While she was waiting for a bus at Master Canteen Square, Manoranjan offered her a lift. Unaware of his intentions, the girl got into the vehicle.
She was taken to Old Town area on the pretext of dropping Malia — a poultry shop owner — who was also in the vehicle. When they reached Old Town area, the driver of the vehicle was asked to leave it and the accused raped her.
Sharma said the victim, in her complaint, said that while one of the accused was involved in the crime, the other was recording it on his mobile phone. However, he said police had not been able to seize any recorded material yet.
After committing the crime, Manoranjan left the girl at Phulanakhara Square and fled to Cuttack.
