Balasore: A "rail roko" agitation called by a group of people on Monday in protest against the alleged neglect by railway authorities has been called off following a discussion between the two parties.

The outfit called off the agitation after railway officials informed them that a meeting would be convened next week at the headquarters of South Eastern Railwayin Calcutta on their demands .

"Since the railway officials assured us they were considering our demands, we have kept the agitation on hold," said Manoj Nayak, secretary of the outfit.

"The main demands are shifting of the goods shed from Balasore railway station, preferably to Bampada and Somnathpur, and utilise the space for construction of two more platforms, repair and renovation of a foot overbridge near Budhabalanga bridge at Orada near Nuniajodi," he said.

The other demands are passenger train service to Nilgiri from Balasore and a direct train to Mumbai, said Laxmidhar Behera, a senior member of the organisation.

The outfit has been mobilising public support. On Saturday, a six member team of railway officials headed by divisional commercial manager Abinash Jaiswal had urged them to refrain from the agitation till a discussion was held with the higher-ups.
