Bhubaneswar, April 3: Vigilance sleuths today identified movable and immovable assets worth Rs 2 crore from houses of Dayanidhi Samal, executive engineer of general public health division, Bhubaneswar.
The official was arrested on Saturday for taking a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a complainant, Alekha Chandra Majhi, for crediting his bill amount of Rs 1.88 lakh.
Vigilance sleuths today conducted simultaneous search operations at four locations, including Mishra's residence at CDA in Cuttack, and his parental house in Aul of Kendrapara district.
The sleuths said that cash worth Rs 9.3 lakh has been found during the search operation. "We have also detected cash and fixed deposit worth more than Rs 33 lakh in his name in various banks and post offices. Gold ornaments weighing 225 grams were also found," said a vigilance official.
In another development, additional director general (ADG) of police Arun Kumar Roy today visited Jharapada jail here and held a discussion with the Maoists, who have been on a fast since March 30. Top Maoist leader Azad, along with seven others, are on a hunger strike inside Jharapada jail demanding early trial of cases. Azad has also sent a five-point charter of demands to the state government.
Earlier, the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) asked Roy to take immediate steps to restrain the Maoists from fasting inside the jail.
The commission has directed the principal secretary of the home department and Roy to ask government witnesses and investigating officers to appear in the court on specified dates. It had also asked the officials concerned to submit an action taken report in this regard within two weeks.
The demands of the protesters include filing of case and subsequent appearance in court within three to six months of a person's arrest and refraining them from getting arrested again when acquitted by a court or out on a bail. The protesters also demanded scheduled production in the court granting them status of political prisoners.
