Berhampur: An alleged ragging incident at the MKCG Medical College and Hospital here has sparked panic among its junior students.

According to reports, a second-year student was shifted to from hostel No. 1 of the medical college to hostel No. 2 after completion his first-year studies. He alleged that senior inmates of the new hostel started ragging him from the moment he went there. The senior students also allegedly beat him up and even asked him to tonsure his head.

Other students also alleged that several seniors had been asking them to do unusual things since they moved to the new hostel three months ago.

"We were asked to wear pink underwear and vest to make us look like Superman and also wear condoms," said second-year student Hara Prasad Mahapatra.

They alleged that the authorities did not help them even after they informed the college's anti-ragging squad.

"We were ragged at 8pm on Saturday night and immediately informed the dean, who asked us to wait till the next day," said a junior student.

About 110 junior students had staged an all-night demonstration in front of the college's academic wing on Saturday demanding action against the culprits.

However, students' union general secretary Siba Prasad Panda rubbished the allegations as baseless on behalf of the senior students.

"I formed a committee with all the heads of departments to ease the tension and convened a meeting of the junior and senior students where an amicable settlement was reached and the junior students agreed to withdraw their protest on Sunday," said dean-cum-principal Arun Kumar Dandapat.

However, the junior students said they lost all faith. "We are still living here in fear because there has been no change in the situation," said Mahapatra.
