Bhubaneswar, Jan. 20: This Sunday, bring your kids to Janpath - while you will be taking part in Raahgiri, the children can enjoy playing along the artificial tunnels to be installed in a special area along the stretch.
The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation has decided to spice things up for those expecting more entertainment on the forthcoming Raahgiri Day - to be held between 6.30am and 10.30am on the stretch from Ram Mandir Square to Master Canteen Square.
Every Sunday, Raahgiri, a term modelled on Gandhigiri, would be observed on pre-determined stretches in the city with people of all age groups, along with the physically-challenged, playing, practising yoga and doing other activities. While cars and motorcycles will remain off the road, pedestrians and cyclists will rule the stretch during the specified hours.
The trend that started with Ciclovía, a Spanish word meaning cycleway, in Bogotá, where roads are made free for people on Sundays, is now being observed in Odisha as Raahgiri. The urban mobility concept envisages motorised vehicles keeping off a road or an entire city on a particular day of week.
On the coming Sunday, the civic body, apart from earmarking a special area for infants in the age group between one and three, will also provide them with toys and other things to make it a fun-filled affair.
Besides, the government and private establishments along the Janpath will be persuaded to extend drinking water and toilet facilities to the participants every time Raahgiri is held on this stretch. For this, the civic body has decided to use the infrastructure of those establishments.
"After getting a huge response on the first Raahgiri day, we have decided to include some more components in it. We will specially focus on the kids. They can come with their parents and have fun on Janpath," said a senior corporation official.
After missing three dates in the past two months, Bhubaneswar finally observed Raahgiri Day on January 17, when residents gathered in the morning to enjoy their Sunday on a vehicle-free road from Master Canteen Square to Ram Mandir Square. It is an initiative planned by the Bhubaneswar Development Authority and supported by the civic body with an aim to bar the entry of motor vehicles and promote walking and cycling in the neighbourhood to observe Raahgiri on all Sundays.
Moreover, the corporation officials have decided to rope in corporate houses and non-governmental organisations for further success of the event. The invited agencies can voluntarily take part and contribute in the event by organising random activities.
"An activity calendar will be drawn up, in which we will designate respective Sundays to respective institutions and agencies. For example, one Sunday could be devoted to cultural events, while the next occasion could be dedicated to sports events," said the official.
A book cart will also feature in the next Raahgiri. This will be for those, who are reluctant to take part in physical activities and need other means to use their time fruitfully. The readers can borrow books, read them sitting somewhere in the place and then put them back in the cart. They can also buy books as the corporation would shortly choose an agency for the purpose.
Different educational institutions have also been asked to organise activities such as community storytelling and writing on the Raahgiri Days.
"Community storytelling and writing cannot only boost the confidence of a person, but also contribute in improving their communication skills. This is a noble activity included by the civic body," said Maharishi College of Natural Law principal Basant Sahu.
Corporation commissioner Krishan Kumar yesterday held a meeting to decide on the additional activities on the next Raahgiri event. He asked the officials to put in special efforts to make Raahgiri a sustainable venture. The civic body will undertake various activities to generate awareness about the event.
