Bhubaneswar, June 7: Traffic was disrupted on the Cuttack-Puri highway today as residents blocked the road alleging delay in the construction of the Saheed Nagar railway overbridge.
Nearly a hundred people from the Bomikhal village blocked the road at Bomikhal Square. As a result, the traffic got stranded on one side of the road for nearly two hours.
"It has been years that the administration started the construction. Now, they are working on the middle of this road, which has made traffic movement difficult. If they have to work, they should make way for proper deviation," said a protester Janmejaya Mohanty.
Apart from blocking the road and halting the traffic, the mob also forced the construction workers to stop work on the overbridge.
"They forced us to stop the work. The construction on the bridge remained suspended till late in the afternoon," said Biren Jena, a construction worker.
Nearly, three platoons of police were deployed at the spot to maintain law and order.
The public works department, which took up the construction in 2013, claims to have completed nearly 90 per cent work on the Rasulgarh side of the bridge and 70 per cent on the Saheed Nagar side.
Recently, the department started work on the Bomikhal side and erected 12 pillars.
"Despite a number of problems, we had been able to complete most of the work on the bridge. The work on the Cuttack-Puri Road on Bomikhal side is going on at a good pace. This kind of disruption will further delay everything," said chief engineer roads O.P. Patel.
