Bhubaneswar, Oct. 24: Students of the CV Raman Engineering College today staged a protest following the death of a student of the college yesterday afternoon in a road mishap.
They demanded bus facilities to travel from the college to the city on holidays and adequate compensation to the victims’ family.
The deceased, Saurav Panigrahi, a first-year electronic engineering student, fell off a city bus and later succumbed to his injuries in a city hospital.
Panigrahi had gone to the city for shopping and was trying to board the bus to get back to the college, situated in the outskirts of the capital. He received serious head and chest injuries when he fell down. The teenager was rushed to Vivekananda Hospital where he died.
The demonstration began soon after a condolence prayer at the college got over. Students walked out of the campus shouting slogans against the authorities.
Alleging that the callous attitude of the college authorities was the reason behind the death of Panigrahi, the students said that his death could have bee averted had the college provided them with transport facilities on Sunday.
“Students staying at the hostel need to purchase a lot of utility materials and it requires us to travel all the way to the city from this place. The college should provide us with bus facilities without making excuses. Had they done that yesterday, Saurav would have been alive,” said Vineet, one of the students.
The protest in front of the college, which continued for around three hours, was called off after the authorities promised to look into the matter.
After post-mortem, the body of Panigrahi was taken to Jhasruguda, his hometown.
Although college authorities claimed that the situation was under control, classes were suspended today following the protest.
“Every thing is under control. Classes will resume tomorrow,” said Ranjan Mishra, a senior official of the college.
“College buses for travelling to the city on holidays already exist. However the facility had been discontinued as a disciplinary action after some students picked up fight with the traffic police last Sunday,” said Mishra.
“It is an unfortunate incident but the students who were with him have said that Panigrahi was trying to board a moving bus when he slipped and fell off . Thus, he was at fault. The students should not blame the college,” he added.
