Bhubaneswar, Sept. 21: Tension prevailed on the last day of campaigning for the student union elections today with a student of Madhusudan Law College, Cuttack, trying to set herself on fire.
Students ransacked the law college, which has been declared closed indefinitely.
Violence was also reported from Bhadrak College where one student was injured after being attacked with a knife by a group of alleged outsiders. He was later admitted to hospital. A number of institutes across the state have been closed indefinitely following poll-related violence. These include Utkal University, BJB College and University Law College among others.
On campuses where the elections have not been cancelled, aspirants for various posts will give their best to garner the maximum number of votes at the 'What I stand for' meeting to be held tomorrow.
'Only one day is left before poll day and we are campaigning the best we can,' said Archana Sabat, who is contesting for the post of general secretary.
Colleges and varsities across the state have taken steps to make sure that only students who have cleared their college dues, dressed in proper college uniforms and carrying their identity cards are allowed to vote.
