Bhubaneswar, Sept. 7: Police are in a fix over who they should hand over the body of gynaecologist Sweta Padma Mishra, who allegedly committed suicide yesterday by jumping off the terrace of her eight-storey apartment in Shaheed Nagar.

Her in-laws and her parents have both claimed the body for last rites.

Sweta's parents have also brought allegations of dowry torture against her husband Arjit Mohapatra, a paediatrician, and his family.

With the families locking horns, the police have kept the body in a morgue at Capital Hospital following post-mortem.

Police sources said they would hand over the body after seeking legal opinion on the issue.

The police have videographed the entire process of post-mortem.

"They had been putting pressure on her to get Rs 80 lakh from us as dowry so that her husband could set up a nursing home. When we expressed our inability to pay the amount, they tried to force us to sell our house. They tortured her physically and mentally and she was not even given proper food," said the mother of the deceased, Snehalata Mishra.

"Her husband and in-laws were also party to this. My daughter was very simple and she tolerated everything only for her son. We demand stringent punishment for her husband. His licence should also be cancelled," said Snehalata.

However, the family is yet to lodge a formal complaint of dowry torture with the police.

Sweta, mother of a 12-year-old boy, was employed with a private hospital near Rupali Square in Saheed Nagar. She jumped from the terrace of the 90feet building around 1.40pm yesterday. She was rushed to the hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Her husband, who works in the same hospital, was not at home when the incident took place.

Arijit, however, denied all the claims.

"The allegations are completely baseless. She was suffering from a mental illness from 2011 and was under treatment. I have all the documents in this regard," said Arijit. Her in-laws and colleagues also said that she was suffering from schizophrenia.

On the other hand, Sweta's father B.C. Mishra did not agree to her being mentally ill. He said she couldn't have been discharging her duties at the hospital and at home if that was the case.

"She was discharging her duties as a doctor pretty well. My daughter had told us a few days ago that her husband was planning to marry again," said the father.

Deputy commissioner of police Satyabrata Bhoi said: "We will question the members of both the families and the husband of the deceased. We will also investigate the dowry torture angle," said Bhoi.
